Digital Voice

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), also known as the landline network, is scheduled to be switched off in the UK on January 31, 2027. This means that traditional landlines in homes and businesses will be replaced by digital Voice of Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.

The switch-off will impact many technologies, including:

Businesses:
  • Businesses will need to upgrade to a VoIP system and ensure that all hardware and functions connected to the phone lines are reviewed. This includes CCTV systems, alarm systems, fax machines, lifts, door alarms, traffic light monitoring, and panic alarms. Businesses that don't upgrade will lose access to their landline and broadband.
  • Card machines and EPOS systems: If a business's EPOS system is connected to their phone line, it will be impacted by the switch-off.
Home calls:
  • From January 1, 2026, all home calls will be hosted via the internet.

How can we help?

Businesses:

Advance Voice & Data will confifgure and deploy a cloud-hosted or on-premise VoIP telephone system fully tailored to your business. We have solutions from 3CX and our own Hosted Voice Select system (hosted by BT). We can port your existing numbers and DDI's to any platform. If you are already on a VoIP platform, we may well be able to save you money by moving to us.

We can easily convert any analogue/PSTN based devices to VoIP including PDQ payment terminals, lift emergency lines and alarm lines or work with your existing specialist providers to help them make the transition to digital.

Home Calls:

We can quickly upgrade your telephone line & broadband to the new digital service, keeping your existing number. You can even keep your old telephone if you prefer - simply plug it into the new VoIP compatible router that we supply. Your WiFi will get an upgrade too - to the latest, faster standards. If Ultra-fast Full Fibre broadband is available at your location, we will upgrade you to that too.

The switch-off to digital communication systems like VoIP and SIP offers many benefits, including improved call quality and security, and integration with modern communication tools.
